Stornoway

STORNOWAY are an English folk band known for their literate songwriting, rich harmonies, and a sound rooted in nature, place, and quiet emotional depth. Formed in Oxford, the band blend acoustic instrumentation with thoughtful arrangements, creating music that feels both intimate and expansive.

They first came to wider attention with their Mercury Prize–nominated debut Beachcomber’s Windowsill (2010), an album defined by pastoral imagery and gentle, melodic storytelling. The record featured “Zorbing”, their breakout song, whose warm chorus and sense of wide-eyed wonder became a defining moment for the band and a modern folk favourite.

Subsequent albums Tales from Terra Firma (2013) and Bonxie (2015) saw Stornoway broaden their sound while retaining their lyrical focus on landscape, memory, and human connection. Across their catalogue, the band balance acoustic tradition with subtle indie and orchestral touches, creating songs that feel timeless without ever being static.

Stornoway’s reputation as a live band has seen them appear at major UK festivals including Glastonbury, Latitude, and End of the Road, among many others. Alongside their Mercury Prize nomination, the band have received widespread critical acclaim and industry recognition for their songwriting and musicianship.

Defined by sincerity, craftsmanship, and emotional clarity, Stornoway occupy a quietly distinctive place in modern British folk — music that rewards close listening and lingers long after it’s heard
